“Flynn, we both need to make three wishes, now go! I can explain more later!”
Brett
When we land on earth, I feel us being surrounded as if by a huge shadow. I look to the ground around us and see it’s all dark, even though there’s a bright sun somewhere in the sky, given that it’s daylight, and the sky is blue.
A huge, ominous object is floating above us, the bottom of it a black grid that seems to crackle with odd electricity.
I can only see the base, not what’s on it.
But I know what this is, the floating city.
And it already appears to be falling.
“Flynn,” I yell, as the portal disappears behind us.
“There’s no time,” he says. “Can you take your dragon?”
But I don’t know. My dragon wasn’t meant for things like this. It shifts reflexively only, to fight other dragons.
“It’s coming down,” he says. “It’s coming down too fast. We’re too late.”
I reach for him desperately. “Kiss me,” I say. “Kiss me and make a wish. Kiss me like your life depends on it. Focus on all the love in your heart. Then I’ll do the rest.”
I don’t know what I’ll do but my heart is pounding, and I’ll do anything to keep him safe.
And I know that love is the strongest, so I will just focus on that now.
He kisses me hard, deeply, his hands winding over my body and hair.
I kiss him back, thinking of every moment together. Thinking of the galaxy if he and his people die.
Thinking of how much I love him, how I would give my life for him.
And I feel myself start to change. Smoke shoots out around us.
Please, give me a dragon big enough to save him. That is my wish.
And then I hear his wish, echoing in his mind as his kiss goes deeper, becomes even more urgent, filling me with love and strength.
I want to be with him forever. That is Flynn’s wish.
Such a wish fills my heart up to bursting, and I feel myself break out of my body, into a shift I have never felt before. I’m rising, rising, and I hear Flynn yell and realize he is on top of me, riding my neck somehow. Holding onto the…fur there?
What in heaven’s name am I?
I curl around, looking at my long, snake-like body, covered in fur and feathers. Bright white and pearlescent, swirling up into the air.
And I’m huge, big enough to dwarf the falling city. I catch it with the tip of my tail, and it teeters a bit. The people on it scream.
We’ll deal with them later.
“Boreas, we did it!” Flynn yells, sitting just behind my huge, dog-like head.
I have no idea what I am though. I’m so big it feels like I could wrap around this planet.
And yet, I feel something telling me what to do. My ancestors maybe.
You have unlocked the wish dragon, they say. The symbol of ultimate love. You and your lover had to go through everything, give up everything to be together, set a new alignment. And you were both ready to die for a different world.
This is your gift from the galaxy. A dragon to save all. Keep making wishes and they will be granted. But only those with your alignment will be able to wish.
You will ride many times after this first time, and you will explain it to everyone before then.
But for now, make three wishes, each of you, and they will be granted. From here on you will always have your dragon, but stay well fed.
It needs love to ride through the galaxy.
My heart burns with love for this voice coming forward.
Thank you, Lee.
“Flynn, we both need to make three wishes, now go! I can explain more later!”
“I wish for the galaxy to be saved!”
Done.
“I wish for my people to be free and live forever!”
Done.
“I wish that none of the worthy die to this terrible thing!”
Done.
Then it’s time for my wishes.
“I wish that this city can fall very slowly, very safely for the planet, so those responsible can be exposed rather than get away with what they’ve done.”
Done.
“I wish that everyone in the galaxy who had a hand in this is punished forever, exposed for all to see here on Earth.”
Done.
“And I wish for freedom and equality for all gay people, and that we can be together the same as any straight people, including having children.”
Done.
And I can hear extra approval on the last wish.
And then that voice on the wind is gone for now.
I pull back my tail and see the city is now floating. Dropping very slowly.
“Boreas, what are you doing? Catch it!” Flynn yells.
He couldn’t hear my wishes, I suppose, over the wind up here. We’re so high.
“It will be fine now,” I say, tired, curling my body in slow spirals as I take him down the ground. “It will fall slowly. It will not collapse the core. That was one of my three wishes.”
“Thank the gods!” He yells, as we slowly reach the ground.
Then, with a groan, I lose my shift, and appear on the ground next to him.
On my hands and knees, and very much confused.
“That was amazing, what was that?” He asks, helping me to my feet and throwing his arms around me.
“A wish dragon,” I say. “Your people will be safe, as you wish. And I wished for the bad things here to be exposed rather than able to destroy others along with their evidence.”
“What else did you wish?”
I look into his eyes. He looks up at the city in wonder. “It really won’t hurt anyone now?”
I shake my head. “Well, it will hurt everyone to see it and know it existed and what it stood for, but we must expose ugly things for things to change and people to grow. And after this, we will have many more runs with the wish dragon. To grant more wishes and save all the worthy. But only those worthy can wish.”
He looks into my eyes, so grateful and happy I just want to watch him like this forever.
“Your people will be safe now, Flynn. Preserved.”
He hugs me so tight then, and energy floods me, filling me back up again.
As is typical, I lost some weight with my shift, but very little in comparison. I suppose since I didn’t need fire.
“You’ll have to keep me fed then,” I say. “Shifting isn’t going to be easy. And I want to go back and forth between our worlds. See the grandchildren.”
“Of course,” he says breathlessly, looking up at the sky like he can’t believe it. “But what was your third wish, Boreas?”
I meet his eyes, somewhat sheepish. “That gay people could have families.” He looks down at my stomach, then up.
“No, I’m not pregnant!” I say, laughing and shaking my head. “I meant for all, in the future.”
“Oh, I have to know more about that,” he says.
“And you will, but first, this world needs a lot of saving. And we’ll have to work together with your people.”
He nods. “We will.” He throws his arm around my waist and walks us both out from under the shadow from the slowly moving city. It’s going somewhere it can land and cause less trouble. Then everyone will be safe, except those who need to be exposed and caught for almost sentencing everyone else to a horrible death.
We move into the sunlight and he kisses me, and I feel my body warm up with energy again.
My comet, in my arms. I’m glad I was able to be enough to stop his fall.
He has to be in my sky forever.
“Gods, I love you so much, Flynn. Let’s change the future together.”
“Together,” he says. “King and king, the new alignment.”
Then he kisses me, and a rainbow portal forms, to take us back to the vale to recover before we come back to re-order the planet.
Everything is going to be just fine, after all.
As long as we love each other, I know that to be true.
Love over all, the true new alignment.
As we fall into the void together, I have one last thought, my lips still pressed to his.
Together, let’s grant every worthy wish.
