If you stay true to yourself, you might just make every worthy wish come true.
You might just save everyone from the greatest darkness, when nothing else can.
Flynn
“Prince Flint!”
I turn as Moonbow comes skidding in, practically sliding against the marble floor in the dining hall as I’m preparing Boreas’s lunch.
He said he had a meeting and to start without him.
Boreas and I have been going back and forth to Earth, running the wish dragon to save the humans there from oppression, arranging new dimensions to separate magical beings who shouldn’t be with others, and holding tribunals to hold evil lichs and aliens who almost ended the human race by infiltrating the human government accountable.
There has barely been time to breathe.
The good news is that the wish dragon runs have basically ended homophobia on Earth, because you can’t wish if you’re homophobic, due to it being our alignment to protect gay people.
So everyone pretty much supports them now.
Being able to wish for freedom, happiness, or that new mansion, really changes people.
And sometimes, you just have to work with self interest.
After all, it’s my self interest in keeping Brett safe forever and being able to be with him that drives me.
“What is it, Moonbow?”
“Out in the gardens, Prince Boreas! He uh, he got stuck in a bush!”
I laugh, putting my hands on my hips despite myself. “He did, huh?”
Given that he gets bigger by the day, due to me being…insistent that he be safe shifting, I guess I better go save him again.
But I truly love coming to get him out of any trouble. He’s such a powerful king, I guess I like that he still needs me.
“Come out, into the gardens!” Moonbow yells. “Or you’ll be too late.”
I narrow my eyes at him. This seems suspiciously like a set-up.
I eye the plate I was preparing for Boreas with longing, swearing I’m going to come back to it.
Then I walk out into the garden, following Moonbow.
When I get there, I’m shocked to see all the mushroom people waiting, in a huge crowd shaped like a crescent, with many others from other worlds on the fringes, watching too.
In the center of the most beautiful part of the garden, amongst two beautiful trees covered in rainbow flowers, Boreas is waiting, and when I approach, he slowly lowers to one knee.
A large, jeweled box is in one hand, as Moonbow pulls me over to stand across from him.
Tears water in this fire fae’s eyes as I look down at him, and he takes my hand in his.
“Soul bond, do me the honor of marrying me? I will love you forever, honor you forever, and always put you first.”
I put my hands over my mouth and look down at the biggest red diamond I have ever seen in my life, mounted in a thick band that surrounds it with layers of different shades of gold.
He holds it up, ready to slide it on my finger. His gorgeous blue eyes meet mine. “Until the stars fade in the heavens, I will love you more than my own life. Will you have me, my burning, flaming star?”
I grin, nodding, keeping tears back, and let him push the ring onto my finger.
Gods, it’s heavy. It must be over a hundred carats. Good thing this fire fae is so strong.
Then I pull him up and kiss him, throwing my arms around him.
I want a diamond for him too, blue like his eyes.
“Of course, you silly rainbow fae. Of course, I’ll love you forever. I already do.”
As we kiss everyone cheers, and I just hold him, utterly grateful.
Finally, everyone knows we’ll be together forever.
I cam here with a wish to change myself, but I learned something more important, and changed my wish.
I learned that it’s better to change a wicked world who won’t let you be yourself, then to try to change yourself for them.
Because if you stay true to yourself, you might just make every worthy wish come true.
You might just save everyone from the greatest darkness, when nothing else can.
You might just be the love that saves the universe.
So I’m glad I never made that other wish. And as we pull apart to greet the kingdom, I feel only one other wish in my heart.
To help everyone else also be this happy.
And to stay by his side every moment for the rest of my life.
As we walk into the banquet and Brett gives me a sparkling smile, I know I’m going to get my wish.
I just agreed to marry a wish dragon, after all.
